I was somewhat skeptical to read The Testaments by Margaret Atwood without re-reading The Handmaid’s Tale (first book of this narration) right before. Contrary to the time-lapse between the publishing dates of these books, it hadn’t been three decades since I read the first one, but five years is enough. However, Atwood handled this issue with ease. She made sure to recapitulate The Handmaid’s Tale in order to help the reader pick up where they left, as well as to narrate the story from another perspective.
I feel the need to state and clarify that in no way does it feel like going through the same story once again. The Testaments is just as good as the first book; however, it feels more in tune with today’s society and that is something I was able to appreciate throughout the reading process. The narration reflects intense hours dedicated to research on the darker side of society and critiques the inhuman ways of humanity that should have been abolished centuries ago. This is the reason why The Handmaid’s Tale was so intriguing and it is the reason why The Testaments does not fall short as a story. Aside from Atwood’s ability to evolution and also, adapt the story to the present, she makes the rotation between narrators seem almost flawless. The three first-person narrators are completely different people: one is a powerful leader, one is a punching-happy teenager and the other is a young adult who has been alienated from common knowledge and “normality”. The author thrives with each character and makes the story come alive by alternating between them smoothly. This story will make you angry, tearful and joyful all in 415 pages. Nevertheless, what I enjoyed the most was seeing the society we live in with all its corrupting politics for parts of what it is. On a silver plate. The Testaments is simply brilliant.
